With the continuous expansion of the e-commerce industry and the upgrading of online consumption demand, orders are characterized by multiple batches, small quantities and high timeliness. Traditional warehousing models can no longer meet the core requirements of e-commerce logistics for high-frequency operation, precise control and flexible scheduling. As an efficient warehousing solution integrating automation technology and intelligent management systems, the intelligent automated warehouse features high space utilization, outstanding operational efficiency and precise controllable management. It has been widely deployed in the field of e-commerce logistics and become a core driving force for the intelligent and intensive development of the industry. Combined with the current development of the local e-commerce industry in Suzhou, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the application prospects of intelligent automated warehouses in e-commerce logistics, providing references for industrial upgrading. At present, competition in the e-commerce industry is becoming increasingly fierce. As a core link of the supply chain, warehousing and logistics directly affect user experience and enterprise core competitiveness. As an important e-commerce hub in the Yangtze River Delta, Suzhou hosts a large number of e-commerce enterprises and logistics nodes. Benchmark projects such as the Adidas Suzhou Automated Distribution Center and JD Logistics Kunshan Yayi Intelligent Industrial Park have been successively put into operation. The large-scale application of intelligent automated warehouses in these projects has delivered remarkable cost reduction and efficiency improvement effects, indicating broad development prospects. The prospects can be elaborated in five major directions:

I. Expanding Large-Scale Application to Cover Full-Scenario E-Commerce Warehousing

With the sustained growth of the e-commerce industry, higher requirements for warehousing efficiency and storage capacity have been raised for large comprehensive e-commerce platforms, vertical e-commerce brands, as well as emerging formats such as live-streaming e-commerce and community group buying. The application scenarios of intelligent automated warehouses will continue to expand.Large e-commerce enterprises can rely on intelligent automated warehouses to build regional logistics hubs. For example, JD Logistics Kunshan Yayi Intelligent Industrial Park is equipped with large-scale intelligent AS/RS and automated equipment, achieving an average daily sorting capacity of over 4.5 million parcels and supporting same-day or next-day delivery for more than 93% of self-operated orders in East China.Small and medium-sized e-commerce enterprises can adopt miniaturized and customized intelligent automated warehouses to solve typical pain points of traditional warehousing such as insufficient space and rising labor costs, and realize accurate inventory management. In the future, intelligent automated warehouses will gradually replace traditional flat warehouses and become the mainstream mode of e-commerce warehousing, covering the whole process including stock preparation, sorting, delivery and return & exchange processing.

II. Technological Iteration and Upgrading to Adapt to Flexible Logistics Demand in E-Commerce

One of the core demands of e-commerce logistics is flexible adaptability to cope with order fluctuations and diversified product categories. The technological iteration of intelligent automated warehouses will continue to move toward greater flexibility and intelligence. On the one hand, automated equipment will become more flexible. The coordination capability of AGV/AMR robots and high-speed stacker cranes keeps improving, enabling mixed storage and rapid sorting of multiple categories of goods. For instance, JD Logistics’s Dilang and Zhilang robots work in coordination with automated warehouses to realize efficient access of fast-moving small commodities such as 3C products and beauty cosmetics, with an extreme storage capacity of up to 3 million units. On the other hand, intelligent management systems will achieve in-depth integration with e-commerce platforms and logistics distribution systems, realizing automatic order synchronization, dynamic inventory adjustment and optimized operation routes, reducing manual intervention and improving order processing efficiency.Meanwhile, the integration of digital twin, Internet of Things and other technologies enables visualized monitoring of warehousing workflows and early warning of equipment faults, further enhancing the stability of warehousing operation.

III. Highlighted Value in Cost Reduction and Efficiency Improvement Becoming a Core Choice for E-Commerce Enterprises

Cost control and efficiency improvement are the core demands of e-commerce enterprises. Intelligent automated warehouses deliver multi-dimensional optimization that fits the development needs of the industry. In terms of space utilization, the multi-layer vertical storage design boosts storage density substantially, reaching 5 to 8 times that of traditional flat warehouses in some scenarios. It effectively cuts land rental costs and fits the tight land resource situation in Suzhou. For example, an automated warehouse designed by Qingdao Fengli for e-commerce enterprises covers only 2,000 square meters yet achieves the storage capacity equivalent to a 40,000-square-meter flat warehouse. In terms of labor costs, automated equipment replaces manual labor in high-intensity tasks such as handling, sorting and inventory counting, greatly reducing manpower input while lowering operational errors. The order sorting accuracy can exceed 99.99%, cutting cargo damage and return-related costs. In terms of operational efficiency, intelligent automated warehouses support 24-hour non-stop operation, with daily order processing capacity exceeding one million. The Adidas Suzhou Automated Distribution Center, for example, achieves a peak daily throughput of over one million orders, significantly shortening delivery cycles and improving user experience.

IV. In-depth Adaptation to Segmented Scenarios to Meet Differentiated Demands

E-commerce logistics covers a variety of segmented scenarios with distinct warehousing requirements. Intelligent automated warehouses will gradually achieve in-depth adaptation to refined scenarios and further expand application boundaries. For fast-moving consumer goods and apparel with high turnover frequency, the focus lies on improving sorting efficiency and inventory turnover rate. The coordination between intelligent automated warehouses and high-speed sorting systems enables rapid inbound and outbound of goods. For precision products such as 3C electronics and beauty cosmetics, it strengthens precise inventory management and cargo protection. The intelligent system supports batch traceability and damage prevention control. For fresh produce and cold-chain e-commerce, it is integrated with environmental control systems to realize precise regulation of temperature and humidity, ensuring product freshness and meeting the development needs of e-commerce cold-chain logistics. In addition, for e-commerce return and exchange scenarios, intelligent automated warehouses support rapid warehousing, sorting and re-shelving of returned goods, improving return processing efficiency and optimizing user experience.

V. Empowering Regional Collaboration to Support the Construction of E-commerce Logistics Hubs

With the network-based development of e-commerce logistics, regional logistics hubs are gaining increasing importance, and intelligent automated warehouses will serve as core infrastructure for regional e-commerce logistics hubs.As a key e-commerce logistics hub in the Yangtze River Delta, Suzhou relies on the large-scale application of intelligent automated warehouses to realize centralized storage and rapid distribution of regional goods, improve regional logistics coordination efficiency and radiate surrounding cities.Meanwhile, the connection between intelligent automated warehouses, express delivery and trunk transportation will become closer, achieving integrated operation of warehousing plus distribution. For instance, JD Logistics builds a multi-level supply chain network through dozens of Asia One intelligent industrial parks nationwide coordinated with intelligent automated warehouses, expanding half-day delivery services across the country. This model will gradually become popular in the e-commerce logistics industry and drive its intensive and networked development.

Conclusion

Intelligent automated warehouses boast broad application prospects in e-commerce logistics. Their development trends of large-scale deployment, intellectualization and flexibility will continuously adapt to the upgrading demands of the e-commerce industry. With continuous technological iteration and expanding application scenarios, intelligent automated warehouses are no longer merely storage tools for e-commerce warehousing, but have evolved into core support for the intelligent upgrading of the e-commerce supply chain, helping e-commerce enterprises enhance their core competitiveness. For e-commerce enterprises in Suzhou, leveraging the advantages of local smart manufacturing industries to accelerate the application and upgrading of intelligent automated warehouses will further promote the high-quality development of regional e-commerce logistics and seize an advantageous position in industrial competition.
